Rachael Qualley, Annandale High School, 2012

Rachael is the first of two scholarship recipients for this year. Rachael participated in band as a flute player for four years, also serving as piccolo section leader with the marching band. Her director said, “band is good for some students, and some students are good for the band. This student is one who was good for the band, setting high standards, working hard to bring people together.”

While taking AP and IB courses, Rachael maintained a high level of academic achievement--a 3.9 GPA.  Her extra-curricular activities include the National Honor Society and the Math Honor Society. Rachael is also a tutor, working with elementary children every other day for about 2-3 hours per week, and tutoring other high school students during her free periods and at home. She is an active member of her own church youth group, and has participated in service activities with them, including a trip to assist the New Orleans community. She is planning on a return trip to New Orleans this summer, and may go to Haiti over winter break. We hear she enters each day with a smiling face and a bright hello.

It is our honor and privilege to present one of two scholarships for $1,500 to Rachael in support of her education starting in the fall at Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering.
